Guest Post by SGHijabGirl, Nadya on Blazers
Say hello to blazers. Let me tell you why.
Most girls I know often fear that blazers will make them stand out, they feel too overdressed and it really doesn’t help that we live in the tropics. Personally, I think they’re such gorgeous pieces of clothing, especially on a woman. Its structured, comes in a variety of cuts from boyfriend, cropped to tailored and it sits on your shoulders. Best part is, you can’t help but feel kind of powerful when you’re wearing one. I know, I know, you’re really going, how can a piece of clothing evoke so many emotions?
I remember during my first year in university when I basically lived in jeans and tee shirts (please don’t judge I have evolved ever since), I was working on a paper at the National Library and there was this girl sitting across me, wearing a grey tweed blazer. She paired it with a graphic comic tee shirt and black jeans. It was such a simple look but I kid you not, it was love at first sight.
Since then, I no longer consider them as just as an essential piece of clothing, they have become the majority and quite possibly, permanent residents in the country of Nadya’s closet.
Especially for students on a budget, blazers are such versatile pieces of clothing. From your presentations to those days you feel lazy to dress up, throwing on a blazer makes a whole lot of difference. They are no longer dull office wear in neutral colors, today they come in every single color you can imagine. From neutral tones to striking hues, take your pick, which goes well with your style. Now let me introduce you to your potential suitors.
Cropped blazers
With the hemline ending at your waist, cropped blazers and maxi skirts/dresses are a matchmade in fashion heaven. Especially for petite and small sized girls, this pairing will not only make you look taller and as it ends at your waist, it accentuates your waistline, making you look slimmer as well. Most of my cropped blazers are from h&m because they’re not only affordable, they come in lots of colors and I’m pretty positive they’re available all year round.
Boyfriend blazers
Don’t dismiss this boxy looking piece of clothing, at first sight it looks too baggy and big for girls of any size. However, it is perfect with any printed jeans or your favourite pair of pants. Top it with your printed tankstops and it helps you to exhibit modesty in your choice of clothing because it perfectly covers your behind. Ooh la la.
Tailored blazers
If you’re still not too thrilled even after meeting the above two, this is the one you must must MUST invest on. Not asking much here, just one piece of tailored blazer. Choose one in the most neutral color that can match tonnes of outfits and you’re pretty much equipped. Doesn’t matter if you’re working in an office or you’re a student giving a presentation, it instantly grabs the attention of anyone in the room. It says “Look at me, I have an important thing to tell you and I will present it in a smart and sleek manner” Really guys, in the land of finding your perfect suitors, ehem, blazers, this is THE one.
Don’t even get me started on printed blazers, I can go on and on for days! Most importantly, no you’re not overdressed. Sure, some people may ask you, “Are you going anywhere after this?” or “Is there an event I don’t know of today?” Truth be told, I’d rather be considered overdressed than look sloppy. I’m sure you share my sentiments.
Invest in one piece, I’d like to warn you first, they’re quite addictive ;)
