Muzlimbuzz: Tell us a bit about Sofia’s Classique – how the idea was conceptualised, who’s behind it, what’s currently available.
Khadijah Mustafa: Sofia’s Classique is a fresh online business focused on bringing a wide variety of exquisite Islamic ladieswear from the Middle East. With its unique and trendy designs, this Arabic fashionwear has become increasingly popular amongst both the young and old. Therefore, with the existing familial networks we have in Dubai, we embarked on bringing in our first collection of dresses a few months ago. By ‘we’, i mean my sister, Zuhairah, and myself, Khadijah.
The name ‘Sofia’ is actually named after my niece, while ‘Classique’ is used to denote a high level of exclusivity, as we are only bringing in one piece for every design showcased. Therefore, buyers are ensured that they won’t be bumping into their neighbours in the same outfit!
What is currently available is our first collection of dresses for the upcoming Eid – 10 designs of very vibrant, modest and classy pieces!
InsyaAllah, our next collection would be in October/November this year.
Muzlimbuzz: What are your future plans for Sofia’s Classique?
Khadijah Mustafa: Our future plans would definitely include bringing in more unique and contemporary designs for the Islamic women, which would suit every occassion from a glamorous wedding to a chillout day at the beach. From this online platform, we hope to garner support for our brand through identifying with the Muslimah of today, and therefore, allowing us to extend ‘Sofia’s Classique’ to retail outlets in the near future.
Muzlimbuzz: How would you describe modesty and why do you think your pieces reflect that ideal?
Khadijah Mustafa: Modesty encompasses the covering of the ‘awra for the Muslim women, such that it limits her from the commonly asserted sexual objectifications of the female gender.
Sofia’s Classique brings to the Muslim women apparels that are glamorous yet modest. The clothes are neither tight-fitting nor do they expose excesss skin. Therefore, the ideal Muslimah can look demure, sophisticated and classy without having to resort to the traditional style of dressing.
