Chope Food for the Needy – Singaporeans Pay it Forward
A Facebook Page called “CHOPE FOOD for the NEEDY – ‘Suspended Food Revolution’ to Pay It Forward” started on Tuesday has already garnered more than 5,000 likes.
The idea is to get people to buy in advance extra packets of food for the hawkers to give out to the needy. While many raised concerns about the trustworthiness of the hawkers in seeing through their part of the deal, most of the commenters on the page emphasised the need to contact the hawkers that they know personally and to have faith in the movement.
The movement’s Facebook page administrator Michelle Tan said on the page: “Unlike in NY (New York) where the onus lies with the needy to approach the shops to ask if there is any suspended food available, the system I envisage for this movement has the supplier approaching the needy.”
According to the page, at least three hawker stalls are now on board.
