Aung San Suu Kyi Calls For More Troops
The recent deadly violence by Buddhists & Muslims in Rakhine state have got lawmakers from ethnic minority groups and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi calling on the government to deploy more troops. Last month, about 90 people were killed and over 2,000 homes destroyed. Lawmakers have issued a statement on Wednesday urging the government to explain its policies on handling the ethnic conflict.
The group highlighted the urgency to address the concerns of both Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims, a minority. The same number of people were killed in earlier violence in June. Tens of thousands of people have since fled to refugee camps.
Although Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi has called on the government to deal with the root causes of the tensions, many of her foreign supporters are disappointed that that she has not made a firm stand condemning discrimination against the Rohingya Muslims who have suffered greatly in the latest violence.
