“Kids of the Ummah” iPad App

Peter Gould, the award-winning Muslim graphic designer, is currently working on a series of apps and books one of which is the “Kids of the Ummah” iPad App. He aims, through his products, to be able to promote learning to children in a fun way embracing the many cultures of the Islamic community all over the world. Muzlimbuzz.sg managed to get a chance to interview Peter Gould about his latest iPad App, “Kids of The Ummah” that teaches kids Islamic lessons in a visually-stimulating and interactive way.

MuzlimBuzz: What was the inspiration behind the app?

Peter Gould: I have two young children and my search for quality Islamic kids content was disappointing, everything seemed super religious and very little in terms of fun, visually exciting material (especially on the iPad).

MuzlimBuzz: How are the responses to the app thus far?

Peter Gould: The reviews have been fantastic both from parents and children! I think it’s a great way for kids to have fun learning about Muslim cultures, names, cities and exposure to English & Arabic sentences.

MuzlimBuzz: Did you face any difficulties searching for content for the app?

Peter Gould: I developed the book and app together over many months, carefully working on the characters and the cities from around the world. I wanted a smooth experience between the two as visually engaging and beautiful experience for young kids. Even very young children can benefit from looking at the characters and cities.

MuzlimBuzz: Was the development/creative process for the app smooth? Did you face any difficulties?

Peter Gould: I have two great development partners for the app & book so the process was smooth alhamdulillah. Look out for the next titles coming soon inshaAllah! Also we have a free Ramadan kids pack coming out, don’t miss it :)

On a personal note, I have tried out the “Kids of the Ummah” app myself and I found the graphics and sound effects of the app very appealing not only to children but adults as well. This way, parents too can get involved in their children’s Islamic learning process. The vibrant costumes of the characters in the app also highlight the diversity of cultures and backgrounds of Muslims all over the world.
